FORTUNE TELLING.
OCCULT LECTURER CONVICTED. SALUTARY FINE IMFOSED A fine of £5 was imposed on a welldressed man named John Kellnnd in the Magistrate's Court yesterday by Mr. A. Crooke, S.M.. in connection with a charge or undertaking to tell the fortune of Benjamin Tippens. Sub-Inspector Fouhy prosecuted. The charge was laid under Section 224 of the. Justices of the Peace Act. IMS. When the charge was read, accused said, "I don't, know what you mean by 'idling fortunes. I certainly afforded Mr. Tippens a business interview." Sub-Inspector Fnuhy: Fortune-telling is forecasting the future,, I presume. Accused (deliberately'.and slowly): Then I thmk I must plead not guilty. Sub-Inspector Fouhy, in stilting the 'ictr, said 'Mr. Tippens went along to t!:e accused's residence at R(i Vivian S.'rcet, in response to the following adverti=cmcnt:— "Clairvoyance.—Mr. and Mrs. Kellnnd, ' occultists, elairvoymts. and psyehomctrists, may lie consulted at Foresters' Hall from 11 to 5. Fee. ss. Written chart, with five years' direcness." Proceeding, ftn.h-Jnspe.ior Fouhy said accused took Mr. Tippens' hands, and told him that he would live to be a very old man. He told him that he would be married at the end of the year. When asked the charge, the accused demanded and was paid as. The e?ru-ed admitted these facts, and added that what he had told Mr. Tippens about his pa a t was admitted by the latter 'to be practically correct. Mr. Tippens told him that he contemplated marriage, and that his mother had died at 103. The accused said he was a lecturer on the occult. He was well known in Louden and Australia, and he had just completed a lecturing tour. He gave advice about health and business. Mr. Crooke said accused had admitted tint he told Mr. Tippens's fortune, and had received 5s for it. It was very easy to get many silly people to believe what men like accused told them, and harm often resulted. Accused was convicted and fined £5.
