rOKT ALBERT. THE LARCf3T APPLE ORCHARD AREA OF ..HE NORTH ISLAND. I Port Albert is little known to the general public It is not on a through route. It is, in fact, somewhat off the beaten track. Notwithstanding this, it is an apple area of great magnitude, its , annual output already exceeding 60,000 cases. It is chiefly known as the birth-place and homo of the famous Dougherty apple, an apple which has so greatly helped our export trade by its quality and the way it opens up on arrival at its destination. The fruit-growing at Port Albert has for many years been in the hands of a few families:—the Shepherds, Bccrofts, Gubbs, Edgars and others. A new settlement is now being formed, however, near Port Albert. This is known as "Komiti," and if an up-to-date commercial orchard organisation, It consists in all of some 14,000 acres of land, about half of which is suitable for orchards. A resident supervisor, Mr. Reginald Shepherd, of Port Albert, is ir. charge. Mr. G. A. Green, of Auckland, is consulting horticulturist. Orchards are planted and maintained for absentees at cost, plus nominal fees. All details of the organisation are contained in a book, "The Fruit Lands of the North," issued by the Kaipara Fruit Lands Development Association. This book is obtainable free by writing tlie Secretary, Box 003, Wellington. It contains much valuable and interesting information. For the convenience of local residents a supply of books has been obtained by E. L. Humphries, who will he pleased to hand a copy to anyone interested..
