LADIES' PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE (From Our Own Correspondent.)' Stratford, Friday. Tlio ladies of Stratford associated with the Stratford Ladies' Committee lire busily engaged making something that can bo useful fur our soldiers iu Europe or Africa, or for some unfortunate family in stricken Belgium or Serbia. On Saturday tliey get busy with the cake-dish and oven, and visitors patronise so freely that frequently the sum earned makes a tidy amount. At present the guiding hands are Mesdames J. W. Boon (Mayoress), A. W. Budge (sec.), and R. H. White (treasurer), who are ably assisted by others eager to assist in a good purpose. Tomorrow (Saturday! the Red Cross rooms' takings will go to the Lady Liverpool Fund. To the uninitiated it may be explained that this fund is mainly for those in tho trenches, and also to purchase necessary articles for the soldier on active duty. All honor to these lady workers for tlieir wholehearted efforts. ~ A. AND P. ASSOCIATION. The President, Mr. E. Jackson, was in the chair at the executive meeting on Thursday evening. It was decided to accept Messrs. McMillan and Frederick's tender for roofing bull boxes, viz., £4O 10s cash, with donation of £2 towards Association's funds. The tender of the Kaponga Band to provide music at the People's Day (seconu day) was accepted. Accounts totalling £3O 19s 74 were passed for payment. Mr. T. Kanford was elected a member, GENERAL. Bowlers promise to have a food year this summer. Already quite a number of new members are attending the green, and judging by their enthusiasm should prove capable of giving the old hands some keen matches before the season closes. The sympathies of Stratford and Eltham friends will he bestowed on Mr. and Mrs. J. Fever at the death of their eldest son, who lias been killed in action in France. Private Harold Fever was under 20 years of age, and was a member of the 12th JReinforceraents. The Salvation Array are making their usual self-denial appeal on behalf of the Army's social work. Hitherto the support of the public in this district has been very generous, and the local' corps hope that the re maining days of the month will see a good rally by sympathisers and friends. The Magistrate's Court was occupied the wlole of Friday afternoon hearing a charge of breaking a window and assault preferred bv Henry Jakes against Ivan Asphind, 'Whose mother, Mrs. Asphind, recently went into partnership with Jakes. After lengthy evidence the window-breaking charge was dismissed, but on the assault charge Asphind was fined £1 and costs.
