WAVERLEY NOTES (By "Moturoa.") The weather made a wonderful recovery on Monday. Nearly £SOOO more on the mill. Who said hard times? The grandstand would not have held the crowd if it (the stand) had 'been three times as large. Wanganui horses got away with four
lieats, and the bulk of the stakes as well.
■Toekster 'Billy" Young was the Deeley of a bad lot of horsemen, and took off ' a treble.
Munition, .Bivouac, and Campguard were three appropriately named winners in these warlike times. . Royal Chef was "can't lose" in the four furlong sprint, but Bivouac repeated his lust year's victory.
Flying Spur, who came up with a big reputation, appears to be all "spur" and no ''lly." There was one glaring imitation of a tired horse in the Brewer Handicap, and it wasn't the favorite either.
Moulu won. the Cup very easily, arid wouldn't have blown a tissue pape - off your hand when he returned to the birdcage.
Did you sight ''Cocky" on Epworth doing the flash in the pan act for six furlongs? It was too good to last. Considering his conitbrtable win at Wangahui, Record paid a false price in the Hurdles, which he won very easily. War Nurse did not reach the front at any part of the Wilson Stakes. She's not fast by any means!
Gaycium's running was a staggerer tor followers of form. She failed just where she generally shines most—over the last couple of furlongs. The local stallion Campfire was represented by two winners—Bivouac and Campguard—at Waverley. Fidelio looked like coining home on her own in the Maiden, hut was made too much use of, and was done with at the distance.
Lord Lupin did not find his leet too smartly in the Brewer Handicap, but he .finished at a great pace. He is coming uack. A perfect picture of a horse is Alteration, but he gallops very awkwardly, and looks as if he is going to "break" all the time.
-The Waverley course did not suit 'Carmel Arch, He is a great strider and should l)e first home when he strikes a hard bottom.
Captain Miro did not jump too well, and might have shaped 'better if his rider had soolcd" him at his ler.ces more.
Austin went well tor a mile and a furlong in the Hurdles, but he took one look at that uphill straight and tossed it in.
Haupai, like Leonta, will shape better over a distance of ground later on. She has cost her party a heap of bullion up to the present. Tlie Hurdles were run in smart time for the Waverley course, and horses of [the Union Jack class were badly beaten for pace. lLady Middleton has been doing great work lately, and the best was not sejn pf her on Monday. Look out at the Christmas meetings. What happened to Crawford in the big race? He collapsed badly at the bend and finished a long way back. There seem 3 to be something wanting i-i Want. Or .it just a case of being unlucky (like Starengo) in always running seconds? Katana- nattered his HI supporters for the major part of the Cup race, but he was hot forward enough to get the full distance.
Harbor Light has turned dirty at the post, and he ran very unkindly on Monday last, though he finished well up In fourth ''possie."
Vladian was too milch of a handful for young Rayner (Walter's son), and after getting away 'badly he hung out the whole wav.
Analogue finished at a great pace behind Moulu and Want, but he was kept too far out of it in the early stages to have a chance.
With a better horseman up, Zola would have troubled the, winner in the Flying. He was flying in the straight. The Rewa 'Rewa—"Billy" Young combination seems to be a lucky one. JTlio mare always runs her best race in front, and Young ha 3 few equals at "beating the pistol." Movement appeared to he fretting badly in the birdcage prior to starting in the Flying, but she made a hold hid for victory, and finished on well in second plaec.
If ever there was a horse that deserved a win it was Bronk Delaval in the Moumahaki Stakes. He was left a street, but ran up to his field on the (turn and just strolled home. Antwerp has more pace than pluck. He looked a winner at the hend in the Moumahaki Stakes, but wouldn't gallop an inch when Bronk Delaval shot up alongside him. Apprentice M." McCarten, who rode Sylvandale, i 9 the small brother of Owen McCarten, and is at present learning his business at Fordell, where the Youngs and other •'cracks" hailed from.
Those who rushed Bivouac tor the Jackson Stakes quite overlooked the tact that Munition was meeting the Camptire gelding on 151b better terms than in the Wilson Stakes. Munition was "gathering" Bivouac at the end of four, and he looked a moral winner under the circs, at five furlongs The notice boards at Waverley are altogether behind the times, and in several instance.? over-weights and allowances were not postsd. Also, it might be mentioned, names of horses appeared on several of the tote windows when the horses were already scratched. Slipshod methods should not bo countenanced by a club of the standing of the W.R.C.
Owing to the shortage of passes for the bird-cage, pressmen had to almost fight their way past the sturdy attendant at the gate near the secretary's office. Vet every Tom, Dick and Algernon Hooded the sacred enclosure per medium of the gate leading iron! the paddock. There is nothing like consistency! The Wa verier Club would 'be well advised if it cut out mile races from the programme. The present starting post is almost on the railway line, and passing trains have more than once upset the horse-, when in line. This was again noticeable at the start for the Moumalliaki Stakes on Monday. Winning jockey* at Wavorley r/ore:' W. Voung three, Jv. Lam'bess, A. Uordon, A. McMillan, J. Cnthro and 0. McCarten, one each. Winning owners were: Messrs 'Hall and leahy £14.-), T. Long £l4O. i). (Janvpion £MO, A, 0. J. Goodwin £lO5, 3. Lupton £95, B. T. Bennett £95, A. Attwood £95, G. Penfold £3O, M. Franklin £25, Walsh and Quarterman £ls, C. 3. Russell £ls, J. E. 'Palmer £l3, W. C. Phillips £lO, W. E. Jones £lO, W. Brown £lO, V, Johnson £lO, and G. h. Gibson £lO.
