The Roumanians, in order to protect the bridgehead, swung the line back to a semi-circle around Tchernavoda, the right resting on the Danube, and the left gradually retiring. The manoeuvre involved the evacuation of Medjidie. Captures of war material were inconsiderable, suggesting that .the Allies are falling back to the river, and have skilfully "" extricated themselves from the jConstanza position, which was untenable after the seizure of Tuzla and the capture of the heights west of the Tuzla Lagoon. llt is common knowledge that Russia is pouring men into Roumania, knowing that the seizure of the Roumanians' stores of wheat, meat and oil would seriously proolrig the war. London, Oct 21 The Daily Telegraph's correspondent at Rome says ihat despite the loss of Ccitttanza and Predeal, Italy does not regard the Roumanian situation as desperate. If the Austro-Germans debouch on the Roumanian plain, Italy expects a repetition c.f General Cadorna's manoeuvre on the plain of Vicinza, where the new Italian army awaited the Austrians debouching from the Alps and surrounded them. The Russo-Rouman-ie.ns have undoubtedly numerical superiority, though it is doubtful whether they have equality in artillery. ADVANCE !N UZUL VALLEY. RETREAT AT VULCAN .PASS. The New York Globe has received a cable indicating that Roumania is preparing for the contingency of transferring the Government to Odessa, SPRB GAINS. THREATENING MONASTIB London, Oct. 25. ! Mr. Ward Price says that, despite the German reinforcements, the enemy is unable to reduce the Serb gains in the Cerna salient. According to prisonera' statements the Bulgars have sriiall hope of defending Monastir, owing to the flat and marshy ground. The Serbians have lost many from malaria. In order to reassure the Bulgars, who , fear Serb treatment, the Serbs photographed prisoners drawing rations and i permitted prisoners to inscribe messages on them.
