PRICE OF BUTTER.

CABINET FIRM OVER LIMITATION. '(Prom Our Own Correspondent) 1 Wellington, October 23. The representatives of the dairy interests in Wellington, as far as can be i gathered here, are not attaching any high hopes to ths attempt being made on their behalf to show that the Order-in-Council limiting the price of butter for home consumption and making a levy on butter fat is invalid. They are advised that they have some chance of upsetting the Order-in-Council, biit they have substantial reason for believing that if they do so the Government will frame another and a sounder regulation on similar lines. The Ministers are quite determined that the price of butter within New Zealand shall not rise, and the powers they possess under the War iiegiilations Act seem widejMiough for anything. There have been various whispers as to special reasons why the Government is determined on this point. The men now in charge of affairs in New Zeaiand, it is said, are not willing to have increased public irritation over the rising cost of living at the time wjien conscription is about to be enforced. Butter even at Is 7d per pound is very nearly beyond the reach of certain important sections* of the workers, who have made' known their views on the subject.
