TARANAKI EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The Taranaki Education Board met yesterday. Present: Messrs. R. Masters (chairman), H. T. Trimble, S. G. Smith, E. Dixon, C. A. Wilkinson, M.P,. and Rev. A. B. Chappcll. The following temporary appointments were approved of:— l. Ihaia, Miss K. Hollins, sole teacher; Mokoia, Mrs. Holbrook, head teacher; Auroa, Mrs. Benton, head teachei, Auroa, Mrs. Poole, head teacher; Mokau Household, Miss I. Randcll, sole teacher; Central, Mrs. A. Waters, assistant; Pungarchu, Miss G. Barak, assistant: Otakeho, Miss E. Death, assistant; Mokau and Awakino, Miss H. Drader, sole teacher; Kaimata, Miss M. Deatii, assistant; Waitui, Miss E. Drake, teacher; Rowan, Mrs. P. Allen, sole teacher. Leave of absence wag granted to Miss Dora Leo, Ohangai; Miss Alice Brown, Hillsborough; Miss G. Rawlinson, Pungarehu; Miss E. Parli, Kaimata; Miss F. O'Brien, West End; Mr Barry, West End; Miss Bunyan, Waitui; Miss B. Henderson, Central; Miss I. Miles, West End; Miss Porlir, Kent; and Miss Tobm, Warea. The following resignations were acrepted: 'Mr. John McElroy, sole teacher, Mokau and Awakino; Mrs. Buchanan, Matau; Miss E. Surrey, Manaia, SCHOOL MATTERS. ' . The Board granted an application received from the Stratford A. and P. Association for a holiday to be given the children attending the schools in the Stratford district on November 30, . People's Day at the Show. It was Tesolved that the application /or half-time schools at Hapurna and Waitevrhena Roads, Ohura, be referred to the chief iiypcctor for inquiry and report. , The Board discussed the sub-cominit-ton, reported that the accommodation at the Okau school was insufficient, there being only 10 square feet for each pupil. He recommended the enlargement of 'the school. He also considered the Mokau and Awakino half-time schools should 'be converted into fulltime schools. The recommendations ware adopted. The Hawera Technical School Committee wrote suggesting that the scholars of the secondary department of the District High School be transferred from the Technical School building to the High School building before the commencement of the first term next year. On Mr. Dixon's motion it was decided to refer the matter to the chairman, with power to act.* The attention of the Board was drawn to the condition of the Normanby school, and members expressed the opinion that the re-building of the school was a matter of urgency. Mr. Wilkinson said the school had been condemned by two health officers.—The matter was referred to the overseer for his report. The chief inspector reported that, according to the information given by the residents of Waitaangn, the opening of a new school in the district was fully justified.—The Board decided to give effect to the inspector's recommendation.

TAHARA-TAFU TELEPHONE. The Stratford Chamber of Commerce sought the Board's support to the extension of the telephone line from Tahara to Tapu. It was resolved to support the Chamber's wish and to write to the iPostmaster-General on the subject. CONVEYANCE OF STAFF. The Board discuscrt the sub-commit-tees report regarding the conveyance of the Board's agriculture instructors in the district.—lt was resolved that the question of disposing of the overseers and the purchase of a. motorcaHJc referred to the Rev. A. B. Chappell and Mr. S. G. Smith for a report. ■FILLING VACANCIES. Tn pursuance of a legal opinion received from the Board's solicitors, it was decided to fill vacancies on the teaching staffs of the district schools by transfers *here possible.
