Auckland presentation. GENERAL BOTHA'S THANKS. ..- -The Mayor of Auckland, Mr.' .T. TL Gunsou'iias received from General Louis Botha, Prime Minister of South Africa, a letter acknowledging the receipt of the two caskets containing the addresses to himself and General Smuts, which were sent hv the citizens of Auckland in December last, in recognition of the part taken by the two getjerals in rapturing South-west Africa from' the Germans, and suppressing the Boer revolt. The letter reads: "'Union of South Africa. Prime Minister's Office, Pretoria, August 22, 1016, —My f'l'sii- Mr. Mayor,—l have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 24th December last', acquainting me of the despatch of two oaskets containing addresses to myself and General fimuts, /-.lid enclosing a bank draft for £iift to lie handed over to a South African fund for wounded soldiers.

"The beautiful caskets, with the addresses, duly arrived here last month, iluring my absence in German BJast Africa, and I hasten now to express to ■you-aid # the people of New Zealand my heartfelt gratitude for their token of appreciation of the small service I tvas able to rendei to that great Empire of whivh we are all so proud to belong, t most heartily thank you for the kind c:.-pres-,i(ivis of good feeling which is fherishi.d towards me by your fellow citizens, and so ably expressed in the beautiful address. I need hardly say that I am deeply touched at the senti-' ments therein.' ''General Smuts, as you no doubt are ftware, is in German East Africa, conducting the campaign there, and on his return I shall have the pleasure in hanflinp: him the basket and address intended for him. ' ,
