Dr. Leatham lias returned from a visit to Dannovirke and Wellington. Professor David, says a Sydney cablegram, has been wounded in France. A London cable states that Mr. William Byrne has been appointed UnderSecretory for Ireland.
The death is reported of Etienn« De Mostre. one of the makers of Australian turf history. Ho was the owner of several old-time Melbourne Cup winners.
A London cable states that Sir William C'ark lias been appointed Comptroller of the General Department of Commercial Intelligence, wherewith the exhibitions branch of the Board of Tradk has amalgamated with a view to improving the oolFection and dissemination of commercial information.
Captain F. L, Harkness, of New Plymouth, who returned to New Zesrland from aciivo service twelve months ago suffering from wounds inflicted at Gallipoli. has received instructions to report at Trentliam on Friday next. Captain Harkness has quite recovered, and the sight of his left eye, which, it was at one time feared lie would lose, is unimpaired.
