London, Oct. 21. -Mr. Ward Price, describing the capture of Brod, Carlilovo, and Veliselo, says that the offensive surpassed the Serbians' own expectations. The Bulgarians advantage. The ■Serbs charged .slopes so steep that the Bulgarians were a'hle to roll rocks down on the attackers. The Serbian infantry 'began to press onwards at 10 in the morning, while their guii9 were pounding the crest. Short, sharp bayonet clashes followed, and tlfe first rocky peak was won. The Serbian gunners bomlbarded the next crest, three hundred yards beyond, and then the Bulgarians were seen to be bolting. A few minutes later the flags carried !by the foremost .Serbians wero waved triumphantly on the sumniits of the captured height. Soon the Bulgarians, who were holding trenches ■fronting Veliselo, •began to retire, the Serbians pressing in pursuit. Suddenly, beyond Veliselo, poured a stream of fugitives of all kinds, infantry, cavalry, and transports, regardless of military decorum, hustling along until they disappeared on the sky line beyond "reach of t'lie Serbian shells. It was a thorough-going, rapid Tout. Veliselo was in .Serbian lmnds by noon, and. Brod fell immediately after. By night the new Serbian line beyond the Cerna included Gradilovo.

BULGARS AND THEIR DEFENCES.

Mr. Ward Price, describing the dogged struggle in tlie Monastir Valley, says that strong German forces have modelled their defences in continuous lines of trenches across the valley to the Cerna. The scarcity of shells, throug'h transport difficulties, did not permit of the artillery reducing the Bulgarian defences, which are equalling the best German defences on the West front. The Hulgars are adopting the German plan of lightly holding the front lines during artillery firing, returning when the infantry attack is launched.

INSURRECTION IN MONTENEGRO. AUSTRIAN'S DEFEATED Received Oct. 22. 5.5 p.m. Rome, Oct. 21. II Corriei'c d'ltalia reports that a gen eral insurrection has started in Montenegro. The insurgents have defeated the Austrians, and the Governor has requested Vienna to send reinforcements.

ROUMANIAN SUCCESSES. London, October 20. A Roumanian communique says: — We repulsed attacks at Goivasa, in the Trotus valley, and dispersed infantry in the Uzul valley, and drove back the enemy to the frontier. The enemy attacked on the whole front of the Dobrudja. We repulsed him on the right flank and centre, and withdrew our left wing towards Lingra. Paris, Oct. 21. Bad weather has prevailed on the Struma front. The Serhians are progressing in the Cerna bend. SERBS DEBEAT BULGARS Wellington, Oct. 21. The High Commissioner reports under date London, October 90 (2.40 p.m.): A Serbian' official message states:— We continued our attacks in the Sokol legion yesterday. Our army at Woivoca and Mishitch defeated two Bulgarian regiments and occupied Brod and Velcselo. We captured machine-guns and prisoners.

ROUMANIANS' VARYING FORTUNES

Received Oct. 22, 5.5 p.m. Bucharest, Oct. 21. A communique says: We completely surrounded Mount Skophes and put the defenders to the sword, after taking 500 prisoners and seven guns. We were compelled to withdraw to Duzcu Valley, and a violent attack on the whole Dobrud'ja front forced us to withdraw our centre and right wing. SERBIANS ADVANCE FOUR MILES. Received Oct. 22, 5.5 p.m. Salonika, Oct. 21. A Serbian communique says: General Misuitch's army has advanced foui miles north-west of Brod. German prisons include members of t,\vo regiments whVch had just arrived from the Russian front.
