POP THE RED CROSS. Following the precedent established last year with such gratifying results, the )adie,« of New Plymouth have again arranged to mark the anniversary of Trafalgar Day by a thorough raid on the inhabitants and visitors fo; contributions to the Red Cross funds. On Saturday, therefore, this renewed appeal for financial help to the funds of the Red Cross organisation should meet with a more generous support than evci, for the needs are greater and more urgent. Owing to the great increase in the casualty lists it stands to reason that the strain on the resources of the Kcd Cross organisations has iheconie intense. This appeal is not merely local, but universal throughout the Empire, and the evermemorable signal of the hero of Trafalgar is particularly appropriate as the watchwords for this Red Cross appeal. No doubt all those who will be asked to give to-morrow have already helped this great humane cause, but our lads at the front give and keep on giving until, in many cases, they make the supreme sacrifice. There are thousands of New Zc,alanders in hospital, and the numbers are swelling daily. To merely applaud their valor is akin to flag-waving instead of rendering personal service. Jt is not too much to say that one and all have a duty to do on Trafalgar Day. and that duty takes the form of helping to ensure that the care of the wounded shall not be hampered by lack of funds. We owe it to those brave men who are offering their lives in our defence to see to it that their needs and comfort when wounded shall be our first'consideration. It : s a privilege as well as a duty, and it is to be hoped that the citizens of New Plymouth and the districts adjacent thereto will nobly rise to the occasion. Money is urgently needed, and every little will help, besides which the pleasure of assisting such a noble cause is enhanced by the measure of sacrifice entailed. Few people realise the enormous amount of money neqded for this work, but we all know that the ca'l of the sick and suffering is one that appeals to all that is highest and best in humanity. New Plymouth aid for this cause should at least be worthy of the splendid response made hy it's brave sons who have done, are doing, and will do their duty.
