ELTHAM.
(Special Correspondent.) General regret was expressed in town on Wednesday when information was received that Rifleman Harold Bates, of this town, had fallen to a German bullet or shell. Recently an account was published in the News of a thrilling escape by young Bates, who was imprisoned to the armpits by the premature explosion of German mortar shells that fatigue i party were removing. Deceased was quite a young man, and married Hiss Gladys Andrews, who is left with an infant daughter to mourn her loss. Mr. Claude Carncross, of this town, has heard the-call. "Jerry," as his intimate associates call him, will carry the best wishes of his comrades that when lie gets to tlie front he will put "paid" to the account of some of Kaiser Will's men. Eltham, considering the population, has sent away quite a number of men, and the roll of honor in the local church sshows that many, unfortunately, will never grace Bridge Street again. The Hon. W. Carncross, a member of the Parliamentary party that visited the Homeland, Canada, etc., is now on the return voyage, and is expected back !n Eltham early in November, according to present programme. "You could fire a cannon-ball down the street without fear of injuring any party," remarked an Eltliamite on Thursday. He was right; the glorious day evidently tempted men-folk from the streets to the howling green or garden-patch.
