HEALTH OF THE DISTRICT.

FAVORABLE REPORTS. DECREASE IX DIPHTHERIA. ''The number of cases of infectious disease notified in the district has shown a marked decrease," wrote the health inspector, Mr. A. H. Kendall, in his report to the Taranaki Hospital and Charitable Aid Board yesterday. "The only eases notified were six eases of diphtheria and one ease of scarlet fever. Of the cases of diphtheria, five were located in the borough of New Plymouth. The case of scarlet fever was also reported in New Plymouth."

The inspector proceeded to state that prompt investigation and > disinfection took place with regard to each case. Of non-notiliable disease, several cases of measles had occurred in the district ilnr ing the month. Mr. Kendall added that he had disinfected 37 rooms, and had visited and reported upon charitable aid cases at Inglewood. Concluding, the inspector reported that in accordance with instructions received from Wellington, he had given special attention to the weight and sampling of bread, butter and milk. He had taken samples at Waitara and at most of the stores doing business in New Plymouth. He had submitted his reports to the District Health OfficeT in Wellington. Dr. E. A. Walker, medical superintendent, stated in his report that there had been a considerable lessening in the dijhtheria admissions at the hospital during September, and it seemed likely that the outbreak might be stamped out at an early date. "There is one thing we ought to be pleased about," remarked the chairman, Mr. F. C. J. Bcllringer, wheh the reports had .been read, ''and that is the passing of diphtheria. Both the doctor's and the inspector's reports indicate a considerable diminution in the disease in the district, and this, I think, is very '■ratifying." The resorts were adopted.
