NEW ROADING SCHEME
WORK REQUIRING ATIENTION. A proposal to expedite the work of improving those streets in the borough most urgently requiring attention was placed before a committee, -meeting; of the New Plymouth Uoro'.ijh Council on .Monday evening. Cr. A. K. Watkins proposed that a sum of £'looo be raised by way of overdraft for the purpose of at once putting in order certain streets included in the raiding sclrjme lor which the ,£42-000 livan was raised. He said that about £IO,OOO had been diverted from the loan to complete work on the tram track. He thought the people whose streets were included in the proposed schedule of work should be given more consideration by the Council than they had so far received.
Several councillors agreed that a number of streets were in nee'd of attention. On the suggestion of Cr. S. .1. Smith, Cr. Watkins proposed that the matter be referred to the engineer for lus consideration and rerort.
Cr. Smith seconded the.amended motion.
Cr. E. Griffiths said it would soon be necessary for the Council to review the requirements of the borough and to make arrangements for financing a general scheme of improvemtnts. He referred to the matter of ihe proposed municipal buildings, tramway extension, stock route and other works not speeii lied in tho £42,000 loan schedule. Cr. L. M. Monteath reminded the Council that the engineer had a great deal of work on hand, and that it would not be wise to overload him with new engagements.
Cr. Watkins' proposal was put to the Council and was lost on a division being called for.
