A COUNTRY DISAPPEARS.
To the Editor. i 'Sir,—lt is surprising how scrappy and imperfect our cable news (urns out to. be. For instance, the cable only mentioned the destruction of O'Connell street in Dublin by Maxwell and Colthurst's artillery, together with a fair sprinkling of inhabitants. In fact, there was a rumor that the said street was going to he rebuilt. But in looking over our New Zealand census paper, I find that there is no such place as Ireland on the maps of the world. I see nine New Zealand? mentioned, two Scotlands and two Englands, but what lias become of Ireland? Did Maxwell's artillery blow the dear old - spot away, root and branch, or did a Zeppelin bomb it to the bottom of the sea? Is it the second England, second Scotland or the ninth New Zealand, or what lias become of it? Being born in Ireland when there was such a place, I am rather anxious to know A-hat has become of it. Or is it possible that it is scrapped in some back yard in, England? Or that they are going to give it to Mr.. Massey ito take away to the South Pole, to be known as "Masscy's memorial; presented for service: rendered m the field of fame"? Wherever it has gone to. I hope the.new master will be more generous than the old one was. He filling in these papers, Sir—am I right in stating my birthplace as Ireland, although it has since disappeared»—l am, etc., JOHN BIGGINS. Lepperton, October 15.
