BOROUGH EXPENDITURE.

LOAN EXPENDITURE, ' A meeting of the Works '..'emmittee of the New Plymouth Boron."h Council was held on Monday evening. The Mayor (Mr. C. H. Burgess) presided, and there were also present: Crs. L. M. Monteath, •). S. S. Medlcv. J. W. Ilavden, F. E. Wilson, A. H. .Johnstone, \V. F. Short. F. J. -Hill, S. J. Smith, E. Griffiths, J. T. Maftnix, A. E. Wutkhis. It was resolved that the necessary steps be taken to raise tb< additional ten per cent, on the stvecls portion of the .£42,000 loan. The borough cngineev was instructed to furnish plans, spec ideations and estimates of the cost rf completing Carrington road and Ordield road, and the cost of constructing fulfo-.d street from tne Morley street end a; far as the money already provided by the £12,000 loan will permit. T ..(structi )ns were also issued to the engineer to submit plans, specifications and estimates for completing the remainder of the work comprised in the £-12,000 loan schedule, the plans, specifications and estimates to be submitted from time to time when ready, and in such order as the engineer deemed .advisable.

Plans of the proposed improvements to the Empire Theatre were approved of, subject to tlie removal of the operating 'box from its present position, subject to the Council's pleasure. An application from Mr. W. H. Beadle for permision to erect in wood an addition to his building in Kill street, in the brick area, was referred to the building inspector for a report. A request preferred by Mr. ,1. 'A. Corney that lit. Edgecombe s';reet be kerbed and channelled was refe:red to a subcommitee, with power to act. The tender of 11. Ford for the supply of dog collars, was accepted. On Cr. Watkins' motion, it was decided te proceed with the kerbing and channelling of Dawson street between St. Aubyn street and Young street.

"It is the worst bit of road in the town," remarked Cr, Watkins when he proposed that twelve chains of Wallace Place and Cutfield road be put in order. The matter was referred to the engineer.

A motion by Cr. Watkins to the effect that the Council procure supplies of metal from the New Plymouth prison authorities lapsed for want of a seconder.
