WAITARA.

XFrom Our Own Correspondent.) Waitara, Oct. 17. Tlie ■ s.s. Port Napier arrived in the roadstead on Sunday night, and after taking 23 barge loads of frozen meat etc., will leave on Friday for Waiiganui. Three more of our Waitara lads hav° been wounded in France: S. Purdie, J. ]). McDonald, and Teddy Clare, while advice lias been received that Lance-Cor-poral F. N. Dowding is returning home with the next lot of wounded soldiers.

On Monday morning, the people of Waitara again assembled at the station to bid farewell to departing recruits: Messrs. Fuller and Ross (Waitara), and Kirchall and Munay (Uruti), who left for Trentbam camp. The Mayor addressed the recruits, and cheers were given as the train steamed out. The Mayor has secured (through the Ministei of Public Works), the services of Mr. Gavin, of Wanganni, Government engineer, to inspect the piles and foundations of the Waitara bridge. A rather painful accident happened to a Native named Johnny Lowrey, on Tuesday morning. Whilst stepping back (as he thought) on the hatch of one of Borthwiek's barges, he found it wasn't there, and so fell to the bottom of the hold. His face and head were badly cut, and the sufferer was conveyed to New Plymouth for treatment.
