STRATFORD.

Stratford. 'Tuesday. The local Oddfellows held a meeting on Monday evening. It was divided to forward a letter of sympathy to Mrs. Williamson on the loss of her son. Uro. S. <). Williamson. Competition at Mr. Newton Kino's skin and hide sale to-day was Keen and prices were very high, calfskins bringing excellent figures. The Stratford Chamber of Commerce formed a deputation to wait on the Hon. W. Eraser during his visit to Taranaki. They urged the desirability of pushing on the Stratford-Oknlmluira railway, and combatted the idea that the Tanga■rakau gorge section should l)e left indefinitely. The opening of the line would mean much to the province, .is it wtmld afford facilities for •ilacing 'coal on the local markets. The Minister'stated that he recognised the value, of the line, but just now this and other railways would have to be left in abevanee. The casualty lists now coming to" hand are being closely scanned by anxious parents and relatives. The "latest list contains the names of Privates E. J. Jenkins and R. J. Trotter, both wellknown in this district. It is to be hoped that both will be reported well again shortty.
