AN ABNORMAL APPETITE.
FEEDING' A HUNGRY MAORI. The latest aspirant for fame in Wanganui is a Maori of ponderous build who reputedly turns the scale at '2(i stone (says the Chronicle). His speciality is eating, an/ a record lie recently ■put up —put down, would perhaps be more accurate—is believed to be one of tile beat ever among a race occasion ally addicted to. gluttony. The figures given are quite authentic' The Maori with the record arrived at the establishment shortly after 11 one morning and genially enquired. "Dinner ion, boss?" He was informed that he (was a bit too early. The 'Maori decided to have "a snack before lunch," and it comprised the following items:—Steak J and potatoes, Is Od; plate of oysters,; Is; bottle ditto, 2s; three blind tunas and potatoes, 3s 3d; steak and eggs, Is Gd; total, 9s 9d. At 12.30 the "snack" had evidently lost its effect, and presumably the pang of hunger had again set in. The native champion therefore returned, and entered upon the delights of a good three-course dinner with the usual accessories in the way of bread and butter, and in his case the major 'portion of the contents of the cruet. In this instance it was a shilling meal, and obviously "vantage in" was with the Maori. At 5 p.m. the native put in a third appearance and hr,d a "light" tea of four dozen boiled eggs.
