The sporting world this week mourns the loss by death of one of its most popular club secretaries, Mr. "Jack" Turton, who crossed the Great Divide at ihe early age of 45 years. "Jack" was one of the straightest men in the province. A forceful man of atcion; a keen judge of man and horse; a good friend to those needing a helping hand; and. above all, a man who never went behind another's back to say what he intended to say. "Jack" was one of those "fair and square, straight out from the shoulder'' chaps, and those who crossed him generally had to admit that they were in the wrong. His capable management of the Ejrmont Club's meetings has often been acknowledged in these columns, and none will feel his absence more than members of the 'Press gallery, who deeply appreciated his prompt and obliging manner always. Tote figures, over-weights, allowances, results of enquiries, and a host of other information were communicated to the Press by Mr. Turtoil in person; and in all the hustle and bustle there was one man that kept his head, cool, busy, prompt and amiable "Jack'' Turton. May he sleep peacefully.
Times were slow at Hastings on Saturday owing to the rain and a heavy track. The feature of the meeting was the return to form of Balboa, though the Auckland dip winner had to do his best to beat Welcome Nugget over the last bit. Bon Reve, Trials and Sea Lord, winners at Napier the previous 'Week, scored again and paid bettor "prices." Two-year-old form showed Vagabond and Estland up in blighter l.glit than at Greenmeadows. Nicomar, Surtax and Kirkby took turns at making the pace in the Hurdles, but the favorite, Bon Reve, galloped over everything on the flat and won rather easily at the finish.
Hopeite and Te Araroa (Deeley) were the best backed in the Maiden. Shiela led a strung-out lot to the distance, where Hopeite took the lead and won from Multum, who finished very fast. Multiplication had more friends than Sea Lord in the Glenaray Handicap, but the latter is a renowned mudlark and scored another easy win.
The Flaxmere Handicap saw Teka backed for a ton of money, but the favorite was never in it. Trials waited en Lilyvale to the distance, and then kept going long enough to get home just in front of Honey Bee. The winner paid the best dividend of the day Vagabond (Martian—Gipsy Girl) started from the extreme outer in the Hastings Stakes, covered more ground than anything else, and then got up in time to win meritoriously. Estland also ran well, as did Astrophel, who was only ''gathered" in the last few strides. The I'.rst five horses could have been covered by a decent sized rug. Everybody seemed to expect something of.Bunting in the Waipahi Hitt Handicap, and the hot stuff won anyhow. Maraetotara and Discussion led to the turn, but S. Reid was sitting still on Bunting, and came away when given his head. Sea Lord was not produced for the Final Handicap, and public choice swerved on to Marco Bello and Ilyginas. Tinontiia led Ilyginas to the distance, and Onnond's noddy just lasted long enough to reach the judge a neck in front of the unlucky Zeus. "Bill" Price rode the winner.
