PARIHAKA ROAD BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. Tlic ordinary meeting of tliu Parihaka Load Hoard was held at I,lm Hoard's ellicc, Kaliutii, yesterday, when there were present: Messrs J. Young (chairman), T. Harvey, M. Hickey, M. O'Brien i S. WiUougliby, and \V. B. Smith. i FOREMAN'S REPORT. [ The Foreman (J. N., Harris) reported hat the staff had finished filling in holes on the Araiwhata Road. On the , Ihaia Road, a cutting near Mr. O'Brien's house had been widened. The road had . been formed and graded in . different . places, and some of the worst places , had 'been metalled. About £SO had . been expended on the road. Mr. F Car- , ter wanted his pit fenced in and the , stone that came from the pit hauled on i to the road. Work on the Ihaia Road ; would be finished in a day or two. A . quantity of stone had been carted and ! tipped along the lower end of the Upper . Kahui Road. An Win. pipe culvert had , been put in on this road. A 13in. cnli vert was also required alongside a 3ft. ; culvert on this road, as the latter was ; too high and was not large enough to i carry all the water at times. The Opourapa Road had been patched, and some of the water-tables cleared out. The Egmont County Council had purchased fourteen pipes for the corner of the , Kina .'Road. M. Hill, foreman of the Waroa division, reported that he had been repairing the Warea Road and had re-coated the worst places with metal. He had also 'broken the 'big boulders that projected and cleaned out water-tables. The foreman was instructed to do work at Carter's pit as recommended. The pipe culvert on the Upper-Kahui Road is to be left' over until the summer, when the foreman is to do the work as he thinks fit. THE CA'FE ROAD. The chairman was authorised to wait on the Minister of Public Works at New Plymouth on Saturday, and ask for a grant to metal the lower portion of the (■ape Road to the lighthouse. It was pointed out that this' road had never been metalled. There were two families living at the lighthouse, which, being Government property, did not pay rates. In the summer time there was a good deal of tourist traffic "to the light-house. RATEPAYER AND RANGER. Mr. T. Julian waited on the Board m connection with the impounding of his bullocks, and asked whether the ranker was legally appointed at the time the cattle were impounded. He also complained of the way in which his cattle had been driven to the pound, being he considered, brutally ill-treated; in fact, he was- unable to use one of the bullocks as yet. The chairman stated that the ranger had been legally appointed. Mr. W.°B. Smith, a member of the Board, had bee i empowered to ma'ke the appointment. Mr. Julian also complained that Mr. Smith .had informed him that no cattl would tie impounded until the appointment had been advertised, and this had rot been done. He also understood tha. tlie application of a married man wit.i five_ children had 'been declined, whilst a single lad had received the appoin - ment. The chairman explained that Messr Willougtiby and Harvey had been a] pointed to interview the married man, but they were unable to meet him. The present appointee had given satisfaction and he thought he should be instructed to impound over all the roads in th Parihaka district. SALARIES. In accordance with notice of motion, the question of the salaries of the overseer and clerk were discussed. Members made complimentary reference to the work done by the foreman (Mr J X Harris), and it was stated that ratepayers generally had expressed satisfaction with the 'workU It was unanimously decided to increase the salary from £4 to £4 15s per week. H was also decided to increase the secretary's salary toy. 10s per week, members also expressing their appreciation of his work. UPPER PARELUA ROAD. Mr - s '"ith reported that with Mr. Willoughby he had inspected the top end of the Parihaka Road, and he did not thmk it would be an expensive job to make a track as requested 'by Mr. Putt. No culverts would be required but probably two fords, which were .a firm ground. Mr. Willoughby thought the Pub: '-trustee should be asked for a grant towards the work. When the Wiremn Koad was opened up the settlers would piobably g0 in for a loan, which would increase the rateable value of- the land, from which the settlers were anxious to milk as soon as they could get an outlet. It was resolved to applv to the Public Trustee for a grant. Tlie matter of attending to a «ad place on the upper Parihaka Road was left in the hands of Mr. Willoughby to attend to, with power to employ a man for two days. GENERAL. The Clerk was authorised to procure the necessary steel girders for the lower Kahui Road bridge, on which it is proposed to place a ferro-concrete decking. Saturday was decided upon as the statutory da„y on which sales are to be held in the Rahotu pound. The Valuer-General notified that he was endeavoring to get particulars of Native Land Court su'b-divisions in the 'Parihaka Road District from the Native ■Department, and on receipt would amend the roads as might be found I'ecessary. The overseer was authorised to attend to the Kina Road as soon as the staff was available. Complaint was made that a calf had been killed on the Namu Road by falling into an unfenced pit. The overseer was instructed to fence any dangerous pits. Accounts amounting to £1(18 lis wer« passed for payment.
