Scrivener, killed in France, was a son of Mr and Mrs. F. Scrivener, of Tc Henui. and wn? for se'.wal years in the local Post and Telegraph Departs meat. The following was forwarded to & Wellington paper by Lieutenant Torn Jon«s:—"Killed in action in Franca on, September 15, 1910, Captain Lancelot Shadwell Jennings, soldier, scholar, and athlete." Yesterday a cloud of sorrow fell across the way of many a comrade in France, many a wounded hero in tho New Zealand hospitals of tho Homeland, and many a relative, friend, acquaint* ance and admirer here in far off New Zealand. But to-day is bright with the recollection of the health, vigor, beauty and example of Lance Jennings' life. " The writer knew him intimately, having camped with him at Trentham, met him at Alexandria on his return, from Gallipoli, close on New Year, and spent some happy hours in his company at 7:inalia in the months of February •and March. Blessed with a kind and generous nature, always thoughtful and considerate where others were concerned (a quality of gold in an officer), even eager to learn. Above all, simple, original and unall'eeted in all he said and did. Never a more popular, nor a mora manly figure stepped on to a New Zealand tennis court, and his passing at ilia age of twenty-eight is much lamented. On the subject of tlio sacrifice entailed by active service, L. 8. Jennings was, fond of quoting the same axiom as thoso of other brave souls,, Peter Clarke and Gibb Bogle, "that the limit of one's "iff; to one's country was that of a single life only " It is an ideal; and no potty, considerations of personal advancement, profit, or wealth in one's possession of worldly goods and chattels should obscure it. franco Jennings died as ho would have wished, and none there arn who know him hut feel that the manner of his going was as fine a thing as his life had been. The grief that we cannot deny is but a tribute we pay to tho righteous cause for which such splendid specimens of Nov? Zealand's manhood as Captain L. S. Jennings, G. V. Bogle, and R. Clarke have gladly suffered and bliisV" : '"' " ~
