GOVERNMENT WHEAT SCHEME.
A THUNDERBOLT TO DEALERS. London, Oct. 11. The Times says that the Government wheat scheme has come like a bombshell to the trade. jrain merchants frankly recognise that they cannot expect to repeat the profits earned hitherto, but expect the GovcrnmcntMvill conduct the trade through the existing channels. The Times adds that consumers who expect a fall in prices may be disappointed. CrRCULAR TO THE TRADE, Received Oct. 12, 5.5 p.m. London, Oct. 11. The wheat, trade is at a standstill, waiting the effect of Government action. The commission has issued a circular to the trade, announcing that it is prepared to take over, at last Monday's fair market price, all holdings or contracts then existing for wheat and flour, all wheat and flour to he controlled by the Commission and be sold through the customary channels by firms appointed as Government agents. The Commission's action is not intended in any way to restrict the free dealing in stocks of wheat and Hour not bought by the Commission. INCREASE IN PRICE OF BUEA.D. Received Oct. 12, 7.15 p.m. London, Oct. 12, The London bakers have increased the price of the quartern loaf to tenpence. MILITARY MEDALS FOR BRAVERY. 55 NEW ZEALANDERS PARTICIPATE (Times Service). London, October 11. Fifty-five New Zealanders have been awarded the Military Medal. The medals were awarded for acts of bravery on various occasions throughout the campaign. Eight each go to the Army .Medical Corps, Engineers and A.'tillery, seven eacli to the Pioneers, Canterbury Rifles and Wellington Rifles, five to the Auckland Rifles, four to the Otago Rifles, and one to the Otago Mounted Rifles. The Manchester Guardian states that the resumption crs Parliament will witness an informal alliance between the Nationalists and Simonites, forming a party to be known as the Civil Liberty Group.
