The Minister of Agriculture, Mr. MacDon.ild, has been in consultation with the Solicitor-General to-day regarding the legal aspects of the scheme for limiting the price of butter. The necessary proclamations empowering the Government to control the price of buttoi are beiii" prepared, and, as soon as they are approved by Cabinet, will be gazetted immediately.
The net result, it is understood, will be to fix the retail price at Is 7d per lb. TRICE OF MEAT UNDER CONSIDERATION By Wire.—Own Correspondent. Wellington, Last Night. The settlement of the dispute between the Government and butter producers has not yet been reached, but it appears to be in sight. The Ministry intends to fix the price of butter by proclamation, and the representatives of the producers, while not actually assentmg to this procedure, will not press their objection. It is understood they would assent to the levy upon lines originally proposed by the Board of Tra-'e with the object of equalising local price with export price as far as the factories are concerned.
The Dominion retail price is to be Is 7d per lb., representing a wholesale price of Is 5d pei lb.
The settlement of the dispute along these lines will be .i distinct triumph for the Board of Trade, and that body is stated to be giving nttention to the prir-n of meat; with the intention'of seeinj whether local consumers can be given relief in that direction. The fixing of a Dominion, price for buttei will create n precedent that may be useful to the Board, the members of which are anxious to reduce the burden of the 'increased cost of living.
