ALAS, THOSE CHIMES!
THEY ARE STILL PEALING At the-meeting of the Borough Council on Monday night, Mr. C. T. Mills wrote as follows: Noticing in print that the chimes are to be stopped at night, I considered it a duty, as secretary to the committee and subscribers to ask those who paid towards installing the chimes to express an opinion "for" or "against." The voting was 38 for the chimes, and 9 against. I have not had time to obtain the names of, or interview, the other subscribers. Cr. Hayden considered that the Council should study the comfort Of visitors to the town, and if the chimes were disturbing they should be stopped. Cr. Smith supported this view. Cr. Watkins moved that none of the tenders that had been sent in for the stoppago of the chimes be accepted, expressing the opinion that the greater majority of townspeople desired their retention.—Cr. Mannix seconded the motion. The Mayor said that he thought few people heard the chimes or took notice of them, and he saw no reason why they should not be stopped. Crs. Collis and Monteath expressed similar views, while Cr. Wilson was strongly opposed to the suggestion. Event;;,illy the subject was deferred for a week.
