The contract finally ampunteti to £3,250/000, whereupon Jackson's commission worked out at 170,000. The Public Accounts Committee were flighty critical concerning these arrangements,. one member suggesting that it sras a bogus offer to do something for nothing in order to secure Jackiw's from competition. Mr. Bonar Law announced that the Speaker will preside at the Electoral Reform Conference, which opens on Thursday to 'investigate redistribution, registration, method of election, and bow the election costs are to be borne. The Press Bureau states that certain American newspapers published an alleged cable from London by "the correspondent of the International News Service, relating to the Jutland battle, whereas such message was not transmitted. There were previous instances where messages were altered out of recognition. On . each occasion the Nem York manager categorically promised that the incident would not recur, Kit on September 3 he published full statements of the air raid, allegedly cabled from London. In view of this continued garbling and of faith, the International News Service has been debarred ail | transmission facilities until further notice. It is added unofficially that the International News Service belongs to Hearst (the owner of the string of "yellow" journals, which are violently proGerman). Conscientious objectobs. PROPOSED "NATIONAL GUARD. London, Oct. 10. The Daily Chronicle proposes the formation of a National C.uard of 400,000 men, of over 41, for borne defence, relieving 400,000 under 41 for ""vice abroal. The National Guard might be raised cluntarily if an absolutely firm undertaking is given that the men wil. be exempted from all future liability to ■erve abroad.
