At the treason case, lengthy polic# cvidoue was given regarding accused'* advoea iy of sabotage and other extreme measures, and the seizure in their rooms of trciuonable literature, cotton waste and chemicals, similar to that found'inconnection with various fires. The police showed accused had purchased phosphorus and other chemicals. One of the accused lodged with a German, who had since disappeared. The boarders included mother German and other foreigners. ' When Besant was arrested he asked if it was over the cotton waste. Receiving a reply in the affirmative, he said: "You wiil find a lot more before you ari» done." The seized document# included a letter from Raymond Kennedy, one of the men committed for trial in connection with Constable Duncan's murder. Referring to I.W.W. matters, the letter concluded: "I am doing all possible for Barker's release." Extracts were read from accused's letters and speeches advocating I.W.W. methods and conveying veiled threats unless Barker was released and conscrip« tion dropped. Tim Barker, publisher of "Direct Action," was in March last fined £IOO, in default twelve months' imprisonment, for publishing statements prejudicial to recruiting.
