RED CROSS WORK.
MORE FUNDS'NEEDED, In preparation for the inevitable leavy toll that will be exacted by the vresting of the offensive from the enemy, and the launching of the "big push," the joint organisation of the British Red Cross Society and the lOrdei of St. John of Jerusalem, which have under their control the whole of the Empire's voluntary Red Cross work, is making an Empire appeal for assistance. "Our Day" collections are being held in all centres, and on Saturday, October 21. New Plymouth will be called upon to furnish its share. APPEAL TC THE GOVERNOR. The Governor ha? received the following telegraphic appeal from the Marquis of Lansdowne and the Earl of Plymouth, on behalf of the joint organisation, and, in commending it to .he support of the Dominion, expresses the hope that it will meet with the same generous response as was accorded to the appeal of last year, when the contributions from New Zealand amounted to £17,054: "I have the honoi to inform you that the British Red Cross Society and the Order of St. John are once more proposing to appeal throughout the' Empire by street and other collections upon 'Our Day,' ,vhieh has been fixed for October 19. The money reecived will be devoted entirely to our wounded soldiers and sailors from Homo and overseas at tiie various seats of war. The generous response which we received last vear from all parts of the 1-ling's dominions encourages is to hope that the con=t'antly-increasing demands for our help may 'he met by a :orresponding increase of generosity throughout the Empire. We shall be truly grateful to you if you will assist our work by organising an appeal and sending the proceeds to us for the sick and wounded at the front. Their Majesties the King :wid Queen and her Majesty Queen Alexandra are giving us their gracious patronage, and they trust that you will be able to see your nay to help us in the same splendid way as you did last year, and that we may have the invaluable assistance also of Lady Liverpool," A GENERAL COLLECTION. General collections will be taken up i.n New Plymouth on "Our Day." There will be a house-to-house canvass, and collecting will be carried on energetically in the streets. The country districts are Being communicated with, and it is hoped to raise a fund that will be a credit to New Plymouth. A meeting of all those willing to assist with the house to house and street collection for the British Red Cross Day on Saturday, October 21. will be held at the Red Cross - Depot on Thursday next, at 7.30 p.m. Ladies who are willing to take part, but cannot attend the meeting, are asked to communicate with Mrs. Dockrill. At a meeting of the local sub-centre of the British Red Cross on Monday afternoon, it was decided to forward £250 to the headquarters of the Society in England. This includes £SO from the Rahotu ladies. It was decided that a letter be sent to Mr. S. W. Shaw thanking him for his generous offer of rooms in Queen Street, to which the Society is removing shortly.
