THE EMPIRE.

TO-NIGHT—A MOVING PICTURE OF THE BOOK BY VICTORIA CROSS. •FIVE NIGHTS." The widely-censored and censured but universally-read novel by Victoria Cross lias now been adapted to the motion pictures, and will be screened at the Empire Theatre for the first time to-night. The picture portrays a fascinating love idyll and five wonderful adventures in the life of Trevoi Lonsdale, a succsssful artist. The drama follows the book closely, and the incidents are delicately handled. Miss Eva Balfour ,in the part of Viola, the girl who ..oved ?o deeply, invests her characterisation with a force that make for complete illusion, she alienates no sympathy, but consolidates it. Mr. T. H. McDonald, a the artist who lives the five wonderful adventures set out in "Five Nights," gives a sterling manly performance of a character that m.ght easily have been marred. Mr. McDonald has a great personality, which carries conviction in every scene. The production is worthy of the story, jnd the cast is decidedly strong in artistic merit. On the whole, the play is a fascinating entertainment. .Amongst the supporting features, "The Topical Budget" and a "Muff and Jeff" cartoon deserve special mention. "Five Nights" will be screened to-night and to-morrow night only.
