The Rev A. H. Colvile departed this week for Tasmania via Auckland. T)>e Hev. T-.'. C. Cook, of the Ambulance lorps arrived in New Plymouth on Saturday on short leave. Two 'JVanaki non-coms, of the lflths are now in hospital suffering from measles. They are Sergeant J. C. Xicliplson (New Plymouth), who is at Featlierstcn, and Sergeant VP. Rogers (Stratford), at Masterton. A cable was received on' Saturday by Mrs. Howling, of the West End School; Mating th.it Rnv. siiul Mrs. Crawshnw were leaving Norfolk Island for AuckKind by tjje Melanesia!! schooner southern Crfss, which was to sail that day.

Father Dore, who distinguished himself at Gallipoli, was feted at Palmerston Korth on Wednesday. Replyin" to complimentary speeches, he said he could not think how lie came to be awarded tile Military Cross. He put it down to one of two things—either it was a case of mistaken identity, or that the military authorities found that they had a few to spare and bestowed one on him. (Laughter).
Mr. K. Page, S.M., is ab.ut to be transferred from Whangarei to Auckland, with headquarters for Thames and other places in the Coroniand-.l district. This is necessary to relieve Mr. F. ,T. Burgess, S.M., for the duty of chairman of the Auckland Military App t al Board. Mr. K. W. Burton, S.M., of Rr/isell, will succeed Mr. Page at Whanga>i. Mr. William Bowling, station master at To Awamutu, died on Tuevlay. Mr. Bowling was a married man, ?:i years of age. He contracted pneumonia a few days ago, and the illness proved fatal. Mr. Bowling' resided in fe Awamutu .for some years, and was well known and highly respected by all who knew him.
Mr. F. W.. Mansfield, Registrar-Gen-eral, is retiring from the ■pubri.: service on account of ill-health. In actual fact, he is at present on three months' final leave of absence, and 1 'he -leaves the service definitely at the end of November Mr. Mansfield joined the service in ISS3, but previously lie had been ten years in the service.of the Wellington-Canterbury F.ducation Board, so that he has been for 43 years a public servant. I'lifcil the year 1913 he held the office of Chief Electoral Officer, but he relinquished it on account of ill-health.
The (lentil of Mi. J. A, Turton, of Hawera, tcok place at a private hos pitnl in Now Plymouth on Saturday night. He was operated upon for an interna; raa'ady 011 the previous Saturday, but lie was practically beyond medical aid, and his end was not unexpected. Mr. Turton was quite an institution in the Hawera district, being seerotnry of the Egmont Racing Club, the Hawf.rn, Normauby, Mells, Ararnta, and Melrose Dairy Companies, and trustee in several important estates. He was associated with the fiolf flub, the Ha worn, Club, and other institutions, an.l for several years was secretary of t h e Winter Show Company. He - .vas born in Dnnedin 45 years ago, and when he frst came to Hawera was accountant to the local branch of the Bank of Now South Wales. He was a pood citizen and popular throughout Taranaki, and his untimely end cast quite a gloom over Hawera yesterday. He is survived by his mother and nister. The funeral takes place at Hawera tomorrow afternoon.
