PATRIOTIC WORK.
To-day the proceeds from the sale of flowers in the streets will be devoted to providing comforts for tlie Y.M.C.A, institutions at the base of the firingline in France. Gifts of flowers at the depot in Brougham .Street this morning will be much appreciated. An all-day patriotic golf, tournament, in aid of the Soldiers' Christmas Comforts Week funds, will he held on the Waiwakaiho links on Labor Day (October The Red Cross Mart will be open to-day as usual, and the committee will be very glad to receive donations of all kinds of produce from dairy, garden, and kitchen.
Owing to the growth of the British Keel Cross Society and also of the Women's Patriotic and Victoria Leagues, it has been found advisable for the former society to vacate the rooms in St. Aubyn Street, generously placed at their disposal oy the courtesy of the Mayoress and her patriotic committees. The Red Cross workers have had the offer, which has been accepted, of a vacant shop adjacent to Mr. Kibby, bootmaker, in Queen Street, and opposite the White Hart Hotel. The premises will be cleaned and re-painted, and electric light will also be installed. It is hoped that the committee will move into the new quarters within the course of a fortnight. "Wake up, John Bull," lias frequently been applied to the Britisher, but we seldom realise that we, as individuals, are included in that exhortation. Let ' New Plymouth realise what every man, woman, and child must get going for Comfort Week for our boys at the front, for our boys at the camps, and for our soldiers at Samoa, and the result will i>e comforts for all. The week's programme will be found in our advertising columns of to-day paper. Yesterday evening, Messrs C. K. Bellringer and H. Goodacre, who were deputed by the Soldiers' Comforts Week Committee, to make arrangements for the procession on Labor Day, met delegates from the various Trades Unions, and discussed what should be done. The Union represented were the General Laborers', Railway (A.S.R.S. and Locomotive branches), Carpenters' and Joiners', Grocers', and Painters'. All the delegates, some twenty in number, were enthusiastic over the scheme outlined for a spectacular display, and definite promises were made to each Union will be fittingly represented. Tn addition, Mr. Cathro (president of the General Laborers' Union) guaranteed <o find eight or ten expert workmen to assist in the task of erecting the stalls, etc., in the Park. The following further donations towards Mesdames Hugh Baily and I). K. Morrison's Fund for Soldiers' Comforts are acknowledged: H. Gordon. Oakura, £1; R. Looney, Oakura, £1; Mary Healy, Oakura, ss: Kathleen Campbell, .Is; Anonymous, Ids; pipes, cigarettes and tobacco. K. Hewitt; five Christmas cakes for Maori soldiers, Mrs. Faull, Tikorangi: watch, donated by Miss Firmston, South Road, and auctioned hy Mr. Nolan, 15s.
