PATEA HARBOR.

QUESTION OP DREDGING.

At the meeting the Patea Harbof Board on Monday the engineer'* special report on the dredging operations w«s; read.

The chairman said the only dredge. suitable was a self-propelling grab-dredge but while the war was in progress this was out of the question, as the cost would be top great. ' There was not one available that the, Board could lease or purchase. The engineer said a non-propelling grab dredge could he used, hut' It could only be used from the one place. Mr. Grainger thought the scheme wai beyond the Board's means at present. He thought something would have to be done to improve the river. He did not consider the present dredge could bo moored broadside on near the wharf at the ebb tide. If the channel could bo made about 18 inches deeper" between the town wharf and the grader wharf, then the boats could be moved at low water, and would be a great advantage to shipowners. The chairman stated there would be* about £15,000 they could use for dredg. ing purposes. Captain Johnston proposed tnftt the Finance Committee go into the matter, and report to the next meeting of the Board. This was agreed to. The pilot reported 12ft of ~at?r at tiic entrance, with 10ft showing on the.. gauge.
