PEDIGREE HOLSTEINS.

MR. NEWTON KING'S CLEARING SALE. ROME HIGH PRICKS. There was a large attendance and spirited bidding yesterday at the dis]>ers» 1 sale of Mi. Newton' King's famous Willowvale herd of Holstein-Friesians, held on the farm at Bell Block. Buyers were present from all parts of the North Island, as well as from the South Island. The sale was held in a large marquee, comfortable seating accommodation being provided for all. After an excellent luncheon had been dispensed, Mr. King stated that when he had founded the herd in 1901 people thought that he had made a mistake, but after many years of uphill work the Holsteins had hade their mark, and now with the Jerseys stood in the fore front of the milking strains in New Zealand. He instanced some semi-official records in proof of this. He had gone out of Holsteins owing to labor troubles, and had sold his farm. All the cattle were for sale without reserve. Mr. E. Griffiths then gave a short address on the value of the semi-official test, and urged farmers to build up their herds by using bulls whose dams had been tested.

The sale was then commenced, Mr. S. I W. Shaw wielding the hammer at the start, and being later succeeded by Mr. C. Fail-brother. That the bidding was spirited is evidenced by the fact that the , 75 lots submitted, which included 15 ' young calves, realised a total of £3942 , 15s.' The buyers were well distributed, and the cattle will be spread over the . whole of Taranaki, as well as the Thames Valley, Opotiki, Palmerston North, and Christchurch. The top price c was realised by the four-year-old cow Bounty Maid 'Segis, which fell to R. Mugford, of Christchurch, at 200 guineas. The same buyer also paid 150 guineas for Pietje Kitannora, besides purchasing several others. Mr. James, of Bell Block, purchased |he cow Segis Galatea, at 195 guineas, Nazle 'Fayne Segis at 150 guineas, and Fayne Segis Belle 3rd., at 100 guineas. Clifford Bros., of Lepperton, were also heavy purchasers, securing about 20 lines at a cost of nearly £IOOO, including the cow Clothilde Alcartra at 105 guineas. Mr. W. I. Lovelock purchased Lady Parthena at 101 guineas. Among the bulls, the yearling Willowvale Rozine King reached top price, being secured by Mr. J. C. O'Rorkc, of Oaonni. at 100 guineas.
