THE CONSCRIPTION ISSUE. CAMPAIGN OPENEOk Brisbane, uct. o. Mr. Hughes has successfully opened a conscription campaign. A crowd of 3000 held an anti-conscription meeting outside, but it was rushed by soldiers and dispersed. An orderly meeting of unionists passed a motion opposing conscription. Sydney, Oct. 5. Archbishop Cerretti, in a letter to the Coadjutor-Archbishop of Brisbane, defining the attitude of the Roman Catholic Church on conscription, says: "It is unreasonable to involve the Church in an issue which its members, as citizens, are called .lpon to decide." For that reason he is sure that addresses on the subject should not be delivered from the pulpits'of Roman Catholic churches. Melbourne, Oct. 5. The Defence authorities are raising an additional squadron of the Flying Corps. A new regulation provides that all eligibles must report by Monday next. Hobart, Oct. 5.
