SENTENCE FOR MANSLAUGHTER. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington. Oct, 4. Ernest Devoin was sentenced to imprisonment for life for the manslaughter of Louisa White, whom he had promised to marry, though- he was already married. In sentencing Devoin, Mr. Justice Chapman said the task imposed on him was one of satisfying the public conscience. He was satisfied that he was not dealing with an ordinary man, but a dangerous man, one not fitted to be a member of the community in which girls "iiieli as deceased lived. The only way to discharge the duty cast on him was to sentence prisoner to be imprisoned, with hard labour, for the rest of his Ufa.
