SOME INTERESTING CALCULA- ' ' TIONS. | Statistics eompncu *he balance- I sheets of the various dairy factory com- I panies operating in South laranaki pro- I fide some interesting figures (says the | Stai). The area selected includes the joastal land from Kakaramea to the Oeo road (this side of Pihama), thence up to the Mountain Reserve and eastwards to i little above Ngaere, thence in the direction of the Cheal road to near Mangamingi, down through Ararata, Meremere, and Ohangai, and southwards to include the Alton and Hurleyville dairying country, and the dairying strip of land down to Kakaramea. This gave a total area of 241,000 acres, and the value of cheese and butter manufactured from this area, during the past season was £1,480,000. or an average approximatly of £0 Us per acre. These, of course are gross returns, and the cost of manufacture, shipping, charges, freights, etc., has not been .deducted. There must, however, be added the value of pigs, calves, etc., and allowances made for areas of land included in the boroyghs of Hawera and liltham and also for areas throughout on which dairying was not carried til. It would be fairly safe to assume, therefore, that the dairying land right through lias averaged between £7 and £8 per acre gross. Statistics given in the balance-sheets do not, excepting in one or two instances, give the average yield per jow in butter-fat.'for the season, but on the basis of an average of 1901b there should be just over 75,000 cows within .the area under discussion. The basis of calculation, viz., 1901b per cow, would probably work out i trifle on the low side, if the Normanby factory can be taken as any criterion. On tins' basis they would have 2000 odd :ow9, but the statistics on their balancesheet show that they had only 2105, and Shat their average per cow was 2301b._ HOLSTEIN-FRIESIANS. Mr. Newton King's pedigree holstein ?ale will be held at the Willowvale ■itud Farm Bell Block, to-morrow. For the convenience of South Taranaki buyers, motor cars will leave Mr. King's Stratford and Kaponga, iflices on the morning of sale as adverted. Luncheon has been arranged md will b-? supplied in a large marquee it the farm. Motor cars will run from :l,e New Plymouth office to the sale iou) 8 o'clock on Friday morning. BULL SALE. Dairy farmers who are in search of a hull for tl.is season's 116(1 should make a -pecial effort to attend Mr. Newton King's Waiwakaiho bull fair. Them should lie a fine entry of young Shorten! lulls (well-bred), and lovers of the Jer;i-y breed should have nothing to fompiain of as most of the leading breeders of Taranaki have made entries. Mr. C. P. G. Goulter's Nelson bulk have wintered well and should meet with s:ood enquiry as these cattle do well in Ihe Taranaki district. A well-known coastal business man, who has also had considerable experience in farming, gave some good advice in a short address he gave at a gathering at Okato the other evening. 'Many farmers did not farm their land at all, but were content to take what Nature gave them. If the season was a good one and there was plenty of grass they would obtain well-filled pails, He strongly urged them, however, to go in for mote top-dres'Sing, which would give them better returns. He also urged them to endeavoi to\improve their pastures - by laying down a patch each year, even if it was only five ac-rcs, well ploughed, well manured and well grassed. They would -soon get better returns. , ft was, of course, impossible to do b : ,g things all at once, but it iJiey only worked on common-sense lines in a little time they would have their reward. It certainly paid handsomely to do things well. The milk supply at some of the factories in the district this season is not holding up its end compared to last (says the Stratford Post). Cardiff's experience to date is four vats for 1016 to five in 1915. Mahoe reports a, similar decrease, which is attributed to the cold snap last month. However, the recent warm weather and present rain will make a material difference io the milk supply, which is certain to pick up almost immediately. Two hundred pound sterling Io? but-ter-fat from seven cows in one season, be.sidei rearing live calves, must be considered unusually good going, Imt Mr. Nicholson, who has a model little on Fantham street, near Hawera, says that that was the return he had this last year. Certainly his cows are especially high-class, but even then those figures will take a lot of beating.—Star. The Woodville Bacon Co., Ltd., ha* decided to offer its works for sale to the co-operative dairy companie in Pahiatua, Rongotea, Rangi.tikei, anc i Woodville 1
