PERSONAL.
Among the invalided soldiery who are returning home by the Paloona, due at Bluff/ on October 9, from Melbourne, is Rifleman H. C. Crocker, son of Mi. J. Crocker, Normanby. On Saturday last. Mr. W. M. Priest, auctioneer and stock salesman at the Stratford branch of the Loan and Mercantile Company, was presented with a silver tea service, on the occasion of his severing his connection with the firm to join Mr. Newton King as Kohuratahi representative. The local manager made the presentation mil, on behalf of the staff, said all were sorry to lose Mr. Priest after eight and a half years' service.
Private, A. Sutton, son of Mrs. 11. W. Sutton, Hawera, who returned by the Willoehra, and Mr. Eric Magnnsson, son of Mr. F. G. Magnnsson, secretary of the Electric Light Co., of the Pyramns, arrived in Hawera from 'Wellington on Tuesday. They were met at the station by the Mayor, and given a hearty welcome home," after which cheers were given for them by the public.—Star.
Mr. Joseph Fowler, an old resident of New Zealand, died on Tuesday at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. E. A. Mclntyrc, Sydney Street, Wellington. The late Mr. Fowler arrived in Lyttelton with his wife, who predeceased him two years ago, in tho ship Huntress in April, 18(13. After residing in the Canterbury district for a number of years, he went to New Plymouth, and eventually settled in Wellington in 18RC. The deceased saw service in tHe Crimean War, and one son, Private Ernest Fowler, is now fighting in France, The late Mr. Fowler, who was in his 82nd year, is survived by a family of seven sons and four daughters, „
