PRICE OF COMMODITIES. COMMITTEE'S RECOMMENDATIONS. Received Sept. 30, 5j p.m. London, Sept 29. lhe interim report of the- Board of Trade's Committee on the increased price «i commodities recommends the need for hastening the construction of mercantile fhipping a; far as is compatible with naval needs; the prevision for sufficient wen at the docks and railways to present the renewal of congestion, and forger restrictions of imports of the less necessary commodities. Ihe Government's policy of purchasing meat on a larfe scale has proved a success, but the Covernment should develop, as far as possible, the sources of supply from . whence it can make direct purchases. ' The committee urge that all person? BOt engaged in severe manual labor, who at present eat meat daily, .should abstain i«ne day a treek, believing that a large number are only waiting a clear authoritative guidance to press this self-denial »? a public duty. The local authorities should be empowered to open municipal shops for «.'lk, meat, bacon, and other necessary foodstuffs, where there is reason to believe that any group of retailers are ns<ng the present abnormal situation to •Itafn excraive profits.

Employers and public bodies are urged to substantially increase the lower paid grades, and heal tntlinrities are lecommended to pstblrdi maternity rcntres, clinics-, child nurseries, the supply of dinner to expectant nursing mothers, and to provide nilk for children under five years of age.
