FAST PASSAGE BY A SAILEE The fine old full-rigged four-masted ship Katherine, with her sails furling and the flags flying from the jigger-mast, presented a very fine sight as she went up Sydney Harbor one day recently in tow of the tug Heroic, after completing a very fast passage of fifty-three days from Pugei Sound. In fact, this is the best rim made from Paget Sound to Sydney by a square-rigged ship for many years, and is all the more creditable considering that this old clipper was built hventy-nine yeara ngt at Glasgow by Messrs. Barclay, Cure and Co. The Katherine, which is one of the few fullvigged four-masted ships now in commission, and a rig larely seen in Australian waters nowadays, was formerly known as the British Siiip County of Linlithgow. Some years ago she was disposed of to Chilian buyers, and early this year shi was sold again to American buyers, who re-named her the Katherine.
« ; NOTES. ' Captain Scott, late of the Coririna, has joined the Kamomv as master, in place of Captain T, B. Sewell, who is awaiting urders. Captain Elders has transferred to the Corinna.
The hopes for salvaging the cargo of the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's 1 ner Matatna are, uecording to the latest mail advices from London, not very bright. It will be remembered that owing to catching fire while loading for New Zealand, at St. John's, the liner had to be scuttled. After being raised and partly repaired she had the misfortune to run ashore in St. Mary's Bay, where she now lies. 'lhe sale of the stc] ship Brabloeh, 3400 tons deadweight, for tlie sum of 825,000 kronen, equal to about £50,000, marks the high-date level ot what has hitherto bien paid for sail tcimage working out approximately at about £lO 10s per ton, against her probable cost, at most £0 10s per ton, when she was built by ;3arelay, Curie, and Co. in ISS!).
