A London cablegram reports ' the death of Sir James Cayzer, tho well';nown shipowner. Two of Mr Asquith's nephews, the son of Mr. Edward Tennant and heir to Lord Glenconnoi. mid Mark Tennant, of the Scots Guards, have been killed in France, Mr. 1). Hughes, senr., of Kapvmi, who has been in failing health for some time, is at present in a private hospital in New Pivmouth. The Nelson Presbytery have nominated the Hon. J. W. G. AUkcn, of Wellington, as Moderator for the General Assembly of 1917.—Press Association. A pleasing little ceremony took placeat the Borough Council officers yesterday afternon, when Mr. E. 0. Clayton, who has occupied the position of engineer to the Borough for several months, and who is severing his connection with tba Council as from to-day, was the recip. lent of tokens of regard. The .engineer. In" staff and workmen presented him with a travelling rug, and the Town Clerk's official staff's gift was a very handsome and useful pocket-book. The Town Clerk (Mr. F. T. Bellringer) made (1-e presentations, expressing the good w.shes of all for Mr. Clayton's success. Mr. Clayton briefly and feelingly acknow,, lodged iiis confreres' gifts.
