A GIFT FROM NEW PLYMOUTH.

THE MOTOR AMBULANCE. Some months ago the Mayoress (Mrs. 0 H. Burgess) issued an appeal for donations to provide an ambulance for use at the front. This met with a liberal response throughout the district, and the Mayoress was able to forward the sum of £520 to the St. John Amlmlance Association St. John's Gate, London. Mrs. Burgess has received the following letter ironi the Bight Honorable the- Karl of Ranfurly, director of the ambulance department and chairman of committee:—

'•1 am happy to be able to inform you that the motor ambulance, towards the cost of which the inhabitants of New Plymouth so generously contributed the sum of £d2o, was completed as you desired, and marked 'A gift from New Plymouth, Taranaki, X.Z.,' on a brass plate. "On July 18, in response to a request of the military authorities for further ambulances, the ear was included in a batch of others which were sent to the front, where it has been working behind the scene of the great advance in which Xew Zealand troops have so much distinguished themselves.

"I think it right to mention that It will lie impossible in practice to reservo tliis ambulance for the use of New Zealanders alone. It is obvious that ambulances nyxi be used 'without discrimination as to the regiments of the wounded men, as otherwise there would soon be on the lines of communication, but every ambulance which is sent over helps every regiment which is fighting. "The ambulances are run by the Joint War Committee of the Order of St. John and the British Red Cross Society, and 1 ned not say how welcome will be contributions towards its maintenance. "I believe I am right in saying that the cost to the committee of running ambulances at the front is about £SOOO a week. "Will you please convey to those who have already done so'much the very best thanks of 'the Order of St. John and the British Red Cross Society for their generous contribution to the great cause."
