CLARION CALL* FOR COURAGE AND SACRIFICE. Eeceived Sept. £7, 9.45 p.m. Sydney, Sept. 27. Rev. Ronald Mclntyre lias been elected Moderator of tho Presbyterian General Assembly of Australia. In his address lie stated there "'as a clarion call for courage and sacrif. e. The Empire would not sheath the sword till victory was achieved, freeing future generations from tiie impending horror of war, and the world from the burden of despotism of depraved militarism. Australia stood bv that cause to the end. ft might impoverish the country and make greater demands upon its manhood, but no men who made a privilege of Australian citizenship had a right to refuse Australia's rail. It was not enough that this wild dog of Europe bp chained to a kennel. They must prevent the madness and make it impossible for an Emperor or King ti plunge the people into the horrors of war, without constitutional coii'-ent. No nation should be permitted |.o go to war before going to arbitration.
The Assembly carried a motion expressing a lirm belief in the righteousness of the Allied cause, and decided to sunport the Government in wnatever measures were necessary for the successtill conduct of the war.
'During the debate, Professor Angus and others severely criticised the silence of certain neutrals. The Rev. Gibson 59 id the American eagle posed before Hie world as a rooster on a dung-hill of its own self-interests.
GREAT SHORTAGE OF RECRUITS. Melbourne, September 27. The enlistments are 2(5,115 behind the quota required. During a test month in Queensland, the Recruiting Committee, after an analysis of the war census, lias forwarded to Mr. Pearce a return showing that 200,00t.. single men are available in the Commonwealth.
CALLING UP THE SINGLE .MEN Received Sept. 27, 5.5 p.m. Sydney, Sept. 27. The first call to tin single men to present themselves for military duty will probably be issued on Monday.
