(By "Moturoa.") Perfect spring weather favored the Wanganui Jockey C'lu'b for the opening day of the spring meeting on Thursday, and the attendance and totalisator turnover were in excess of previous figures. Considering the very moderate stakes offered at this gathering the fields were good and the racing fairly interesting. Winners were hard to only one first favorite (Wrestler) scoring, though C'hakwana, Gaycium and Hvlatus were heavily backed in the races they won. Taranaki horses did fairly well, Depredation getting away with the Spring Handicap in fine style, while Fidelio, Styrax, Rewi Poto and Camp Guard also gained place money. Panmurc was sent out a firm favorite for the Flying Handicap, Imt the long delay at the post upset him, and he did not get away too well. Tyson was turned the wrong way, and took no fart in the race. Chakwana had it won at any part, though Miacara finished last and made a pretty race of it to the post. iPnnmure, Rangitero, Ast-or, Interlude and Veto finished in that order, Wrestler made a complete exhibition or the big crowd in the Maiden. Getting to the front at the end of a furlong ho couldn't go slow enough to allow the others to keep in the panorama. Carmel Arch was the only one to seriously chase the leader, and it was a hopeless task. Hine Toa was slow to begin, but improved her position in the run to the turn, but then faded out of it. Wrestler won hard held by several lengths fiom Carmel Arch, with Wapping a bad third, and Quiun's Post, Turangapito, Woodlark and Haupai straggling after. The start for the Wanganui Guineas changed the whole result of the race, and Bjorneborg was very lucky to gain a ibreak from Good Hope and Splendant, both of which had their chances extinguished from the word "Go." There was a lot of messing about at the barrier, owing to the antics of Hyttus and Bjorneborg. Good Hope was the quietest of the hunch, and of course he got the worst of the deal. When the tapes lifted Hyttus and Splendant cannoned into Good Hope, and the trio lost many lengths. Sweet Tipperary and Elation played see-saw to the distance, where Bjorneborg came with a wet sail and scored nicely by less than a length. Sweet Tipperary stayed on well, fighting out every incli of the ground over the hist furlong. Elation was a fair third, just in front of Splendant and Good Hope. Piirsefiller was considered to be "the pea" for the Okchu Hurdles, and she and Crawford carried a ton of coin. Both got away badly, however, and never im- ! proved their position. The race was fought out by the stable mates Vladian and Marton, and in a great finish the former just gained the verdict. Both horses paid nice prices. Styrax and Harbor Light both looked big in condition, but shaped fairly well.
The Gonville Hurdles was another boilover, the winner turning up in the shape of the l'ordell cast-off Record, who was the outsider of the seven runners, and carried less than a hundred tickets on the machine. Combustion, the hot order, led Golden March for a mile and a quarter and then retired. Golden March looked a winner at the turn, but, Record easily cut him down ,in the run liome. The winner was not supported lor a penny piece by his party, as-Ilia track form had been of the poorest possible description. Gang Awa, Oev.otion, and Gaycium were the elect .the backers for the Putiki Hack Race, and, the last-yarned scored nicely when called upon in tlie straight. Bivouac and Starengo showed a lot of pace in the early stages, but failed to sec the trip out. Fidelio finished well, and paid more than the winner. Then came Stafengo, Devotion
and Sylviaroa. The latter got away badly, but put In a good run in the straight. There was little to choose between Seddel Bnlir. Square Deal and Depredation in the Spring Handicap. It was a good start, but there appeared to 'be a lot of bumping at the turns. Beltane jumped out first and led Rewipoto and Depredation along the back. At the turn Rewipoto drew level, but failed to go on with it. Depredation eame with a great burst of speed from the distance, and beat Beltane easily. Then came Rewipoto, Seddel Balir, Roumania and Marsinah. A big field lined up for the Curie Hack Handicap, Moulu, Revalenta and Hylatus carrying most money. Hylatus led all the way and scored 'by less than a length from Cleft, who came up fast from a long way t>ac,k. Camp Guard, who was paying a great price, was right up third, and Zola, Revalenta and Antwerp were almost in line. Moulu shaped very badly. Dood anil Abalone fell, and Metcalfe, rider of the latter, received serious injuries to his spine. Good acceptances are carded for today's races. Grcenstrect and Miacara may be best backed in the Owen Handicap, and Carmel Arch and Splendant in the Railway Handicap. Purseiiller should again be solidly supported in the open hurdles, and Marton will not want for backers in the Hack Steeples. Cleft, Gaycium and Fidelio are expected to carry money in the hack events, and Depredation, Nones and Avon Park are much discussed candidates in the principal flat races.
