MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
Ucfore Mr. A. Crooke, S.JI, BICYCLE OI'TEXCK-S. T. Hoffman was charged with riding a bicycle 011 the Ca'-rington Road on Aug. 27, without a light. Mr. A. H. Johnstone, (for Mr. Quilliam) appeared for the Taranaki County Council. Defendant did not appear, and the county inspector (Mr. C.'D. firant) proved the ofleuce. ,A line of 3s and costs 17s (id was tlie penalty. Puke New Zealand, a Maori for whom iiie services of an interpreter were required, was charged on the information of the county inspectoi with riding a bicycle without lights on IDevon P,oad, 801 l Block, on August 5, between the hours of sunset and sunrise. Mr. A. PI. Johnstone appeared for informant, ar.d defendant pleaded guiltf. C. D. f-Jrant. inspector, said that he did not see the offence, but be received information that there had been an accident on the Devon street footpath, and on the following day went out and was informed the defendant was the came of it. Sunset on August a was at 5.3 p,m, and the offence occurred between C and 0.30 p.m. A fine of os and costs £1 14s 4d was inflicted. BREACHES OF BOROUGH BY-LAWS. B. Tippins (inspector) proceeded against Arthur Haigh, a driver employed by the N.Z. Express Company, for driving a lorry over a footpath in But tiel Street at a point where there is no proper crossing. In pleading guilty for defendant, Mr. Bennett said he understood that the. case was merely brought as a warning. 1 1' or a long time express drivers and 'others bad been in the iiabit of going over footpaths at , places where there were no specified crossings, and the Horough Council had decided that the practice must be discontinued. The inspector said that he did not press for a penalty, and his Worship recorded a conviction. James Thompson, for whom Mr. Johnstone appeared, was charged with taking up a position on a cab stand with his motor car with which he was plying for hire. A plea of guilty was entered, and defendant was fined ss, and costs 17s Gil.
