DIRECT SERVICE WITH TU'J - DOMINION, Ey Telegraph.—l'ross Association Wellington, .September li>. Mr. W. McMastcr, of the firm of Messrs Burns, Philp and Co., of Sydney, Australasian representatives of the Nippon Yusen Kaisha. is at present in Wellington on a mission to ascertain the prospects of establishing a direct steamer service between Japan and New Zealand. At present there is si regular service under contract with the Japanese Government by which a .monthly service is secured with Australia by means of three steamers, and latterly an intermediate sailing of cargo steamers has scoured practically a fortnightly service. This service, being under contract for trade with Australia, must take all Australian cargo offering, and consignments to New Zealand take second place, being used simply for filling up transhipments made from Sydney, and Xew Zealand importers have experienced difficulty in obtaining sufficient space for their requirements. It is proposed, if sufficient inducement offers, to have a separate service to New Zealand, hut whether it will be brought about depends upon the amount of support that can be calculated upon from New Zealand importers. It may be necessary in the first instance to fill up with Australian cargoes, but consignments to New Zealand would have preference. The Nippon Yusen Kaisha's first boat to New 'Zealand arrives at Wellington on Friday with 2500 tons of cargo for the Dominion. =■■: i
