SHIRKING FAMILIES.

*'V -a SOME EXTRAORDINARY FIGURES. Wellington, September 10, "Pouring in" seems to bo the only adequate phrase to describe the way in which evidence regarding shirking families is accutnulatiag . Recruiting committees have for a long time been hampered in their efforts by t'lic had example of families containing several sons, none of whom have enlisted, as they have bsen too profitably employed at home, Other young fellows have put forward these cases as a reason for holding back, so that the committees are well aware of most of the bad examples throughoutj and they have forwarded'; to the National Recruiting Board the information they possess. Of course, before action is taken to compel enlistment, the evidence will have to be carefully sifted, and the Government does not intend to go in for arbitrary action without the most positive justification. The Military Service hoards will 'be appointed at the end of the week, and then the family shirker clause will be made operative, those ciigibles -being called upon to show cause why they should not be summarily enlisted. To show the need of this clause it is only necessary to mention that in one recruiting district, no fewer than 631 names of alleged "family s'hirkers'' have been reported. In part of another district SS names have been submitted for attention.
