SOLDIERS' COMFORTS. A meeting of the Soldiers' Comfort! ' Committee was lield in the Town Hall yesterday afternoon. Present: Mrs, Burgess, Messrs Carter (in the ctiairW C. Bellringer, J. Clarke, W. J. Chaney, J d , B. Hill, If. Goodacre, and F, W. Q< j McLeod (lion, secretary). - llr. Bellringer reported that liis motion for a grant to the Ladies' Committed had been carried at a general meeting' • of the Patriotic Committee. The Railway Department notified that) , they could not Bee their way to delayi the afternoon trains during Carnival Week, nor could they agree to excursion fares as suggested.—lt was resolved, oni the motion of Messrs Bellringer and) Hill, that his Worship the Mayor bo requested to approach thd Minister foe Railways on the subject. l . * Mr, Bellringer stated that he had Seen Mr. J. S. Connett, who had expressed hti willingness to act on the committee, A letter was read from Mr. P. J. agan stating that he had practically ar* ranged for r billiard tournament 1b aid of the fimds.—On the motion of MeMra Clarke and Cha ley the offer war accepted/ ivitli thanks. ( \ Mr. J. W. 11, Martin attended HiS meeting by invitation, lie having cornel 1 forward with a suggestion tc a tobacco „ scheme as a present for soldiers at thei* front. The tins suggested will 'eachf. hold a card of greeting, 4 plug* of to», baceo, and 5 packets of cigarettes.. ThejJ cost to each donor would be 3s. \ On the motion of Messrs Bellringfer anil 1 Clarke it was resolved that tile schema be adopted, and Messrs. Clarke, Hill, and Martin were appointed a committee tcf proceed with it. * The .chairman thanked Mr. Martin foif his interest, and, on his suggestion, that! gentleman was added to the Comforts Committee and appointed convener oB the Three Shilling Fund. ' < Mr. ( ioodaere reported that the various schools were making their arrangements * for the week; also, that the Assocation had voted £lO to the fund. Mr. Clarke reported on the Franjclejj Road meeting, and announced the reaw dents' decision. < i[r=. Burgess reported that the LadiesJ Committee would run two pavilions ill the Pukekura grounds on Labor Day, and that tile- Fitzroy ladies would provide qj tea stall. / Sir. Martin brought forward the sugc gestion of a photo scheme, the idea t>e* ing to induce photographers (amateu* and professional! to take photographs o( show places of the town, private houses, etc., and purvey them in aid of the fund. —lt was agAcd that the matter be fur« tber inquired into. Mrs. Wood's orchestra, who have prepared a special programme, wili dispense music during the afternoon. The promoters wish itt to be clearly understood that no orders for produce, etc., can be booked before-, hand. As the charge for admission taf the hail will be sixpence only, the pubi lie should bestow generous patronage. The proceeds of the dramatic recital < in the Good Templar Hall on Monday night, in aid of the New Zealand No. II Stationary Hospital, amounted to ..£69 Fs 3d. *A few sums are still to ba iianded in, and it is expected that, tha ftinds will benefit to the extent of £GO, Mrs. Burgess acknowledges ft chequa for £5 from Mr. W. J. Gray, of Okato, for the Soldiers' Christmas Fund. l Sergeant J. M. Wilson, C Company, 3rd Battalion, X.Z. Rifle Brigade, writes <ii August 2, from the trenches ill France, to the Secretary of the Women's Patriotic Committee, as follows: "Jusft a note to thank you all for your splendid little parcels. Tf you had been present to witness the arrival and distribution of your gifts you would al> have felt amply rewarded Tor j our kindness. The secretary of tho Women's t Patriotic Committee has also the following letter from Runner J. S J Cameron, 3rd Machine-Gun Company:—. While in the trench I heard of youß generous gift of parcels to New Zealanders serving in France, and availed myself of the opportunity and secured a oarcel from the Y.M.C.A. Your society must be congratulated on the exceedingly appropriate choice of articles whieb the parcels contained.
