CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, (From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Yesterday. A meeting jf the Stratford Chamber ot Commerce was held in the Municipal Chambers last evening, there being present: The President (Mr. J. B. Richards) m the ' liair, Messrs. W. P. Kirkwood, R. Masters, P. Thomson, D. J. Malont, W. A, Hewitt, and W. 11. i'oung. The president was appointed a delegate to represent the Chamber at the ecm'crence regarding the establishment nf a model d.ury farm for the district. Members present expressed their approval of the scheme. The General Manager of Railways forward! -I samples of poster stamps containing views illustrating New Zealand country life. These stamps are to be used at the back of the envelope on overseas lettus, and he asked for the (hamper's cooperation in distributing the stamps in riie way suggested. The matter of supplying the general manager with the nr.mes of firms in the district willing to i<sp the stamps was left in the hands of Mr. R. Masters. The secretary of tiie F.ltham Chamber wrote in regard to the issue of postoi stamp-! by the R:\ilwiiy Department, that no views of Taranaki had been included in the series and stating that his Chamber had written the Department requesting a quotation for a series of ten views depicting Taranaki scenes. He asked lor the co-operation of the Stivti'ord Chamber in the matter. It was decided to endorse the request. The Secretary of the Post Office wrote regarding telephonic communication between Tahora and Tatu. The Minister rcgrjtied that he could not at present entertain the request as the work was not an absolute necessity. Taliori and Tatu are in telegraphic (ommunication with each other and the cost of making a direct communication would be very'large. The president said they had certainly pushed the matter a little further on, but it was still far from satisfactory. Although Tahora and Tatu were only is miles apart, if Tahora wanted to telegraph Tatu the message had to come out to Stratfflrd, be wired to Auckland, thence to Tatu, from the Auckland sida The matter was more than a provincial one, it was a Dominion matter, and t'iould not be ailowed to drop. Mr. W. P. Kirkwood moved: That the l'ostmaster-General be again written to re telephonic communication betweenTahora and Tatu, and that the Ohura County Council, Taranaki Chamber of Commerce, Taranaki Education Board, Whaii2amomona, and Stratford County Councils,. Stratford Borough Council, and A'ew Plymouth Harbor Board be asked to co-operate in the matter. Mr. R. Masters seconded the motion, .vhieli was carried.
His ivlajesty's Tiade Commissioner for New Zealand (Mr. K. I'uJton) wrote in'orining the Chamber that lie would be visiting the Tarariaki district shortly ""d V'Ould be pleased to meet members and .any others interested in Home trade.—The Chamber will assist in ever/ way. The Association of New Zealand Chambers of Commerce notified that the annual conference of Chambers of Commerce will be held in Wellington on November 22r,d. The question of sending remits for discussion was held over till next meeting, Mr. H. Ashton was elected a member of the Committee. ' Mr. W. A, Hewitt said he noticed that (he Minister for Public Works intended touring the Dominion, and he thought Uie Chamber should invite liini to visit this district. Mr. D. J. Malone moved, and Mr. Young seconded, that the Minister be nsked to include Stratford in his tour. —Carried. The president sa : i a statement had leen made at a recent meeting of the Borough Council that the Chamber was one oi the closest corporations in the town. He wished to give the statement a public denial. The Chamber would be very pleased if some of these councillors wci)ld come along to give their assistance, and he was sure they would be welcomed. A vote of thanks to the Borough Council for the use of the Borough Chambers terminated the meeting.
GENJSRAIi At tne Chamber of Commerce meeting a letur from a Japanese firm caused some amusement when read. It stated: "I'irst of all, I beg to take liberty of introducing myself, of what I am. My iirm has been established very old, and have had experience, for long time of o"er two hundred years. As a matter of course, my forefathers were not engaged in foreign trade, but expanding by degrees at the present period of my generation, I might say to be doing tolerably extensive foreign trade," and rhe writer winds up by saying that as to his financial standing, he referred 'hem to ''any bank first-class in Japan." Sir. J. Donald has disposed of his ,ii6tor garage business to Mr. G. S. Sy1110ns, of Tariki. The Stratford I'airy Company are paying out to-morrow £4123 for August vnilk, equal to Is 5(1 per lb. Lowgarth Dairy Company are paying their suppliers £782. The local Bowling Green (weather permitting) will he open for practice cn Thursday afternoon. s The amounr, collected for the Wounded Soldiers' Fund now totals £7091 lis 10d. The president of the Stratford A. and P. Association addressed the shareholders of the Ngaire Dairy Company at their annual meeting yesterday, advocating a contribution to the prize fund i f the Association. He received a good hearing, and a vote of £ls 18s,< as evi'l* nee of their practical sympathy.
