BOROUGH COUNCIL.

•WORKS COMMITTEE, The weekly meeting of the above Committee whs lieltl lust evening, tliere being present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr. C. H. Burgess), Cr«. 1,. M. Monteath, J. Haytlen, J. ,S. Medley, A. JI, Johnstone, W. A. Collis, W. F. Short, S. C. Smith, .1. T. Mannix, F. J. Hill, ami A. 10. Watkins. (Vs. Johnstone, Smith, and Wall iins Aver appointed a, committee to moot repvovntatives of the General Union in connection with the recent industrial award. It was resolved that the sum of '£ls be paid as compensation to Mr. R. W. J. Davies for the land dedicated for the widening of Tnkapa Road. Crs. Medley, Watkins, and Hill, ivho were deputed to inspect the Frankley Road Hill, adjoining Mr. Jones' property, reported: From the Frankley Road Board records we find that in 1002 the Board bought land from Mr. Jones for the purpose of deviating the Frankley Road, for which they paid £135. It is evident that sufficient land was not acquired to allow enough batter to make the bank safe, and consequently we are now encroaching on Mr. Jones''property in several places, and there are other places which appear likely to come down at any time. We interviewed Mr. Jones re the amount of land required to make road safe, but he absolutely refused to give any indication of what amount lit would take as compensation, but oil a further interview to-day, he said he would require £IOO, provided the Boil removed is deposited on his property on the opposite side of the road. The land taken would have to be fenced and this would cost £!). The Engineer estimates that it would cost about £SO to cut the bank back at the two most dangerous places. £IOO is excessive for the right to cut back the amount required, and we therefore recommend the Council to offer £25 as compensation. We do not consider that there is any great urgency in having this work carried out immediately." Crs. Hayden and Smith moved that Mr. Jones be offered £2u compensation in terms of the Committee's report, ail'J this was carried.
