A well-known identity on the Wellington waterfront and to the travelling public, Mr. John Witheridge, quartermaster of the Union Co.'s ferry steamer Mararoa, died at Dunedin on Wednesday after being in the hospital there for about four months. Old ''Jack,'' as lie was familiarly -known hy his friends, was for about twenty years engaged on the Mararoa, which vessel lie left a'hout four months ago. Witheridge had an adventurous career, both ashore and alloat, having enlisted in the American Civil War and served afterwards in the famous ten clippers Cutty Sark and Undine, and later on in the American and Australian ship Snrat. Altogether he spent half a century at sea.
